Grubs are the larval stage of beetles, most commonly Japanese beetles and June beetles in Maine, and they are one of the few lawn problems that can cause serious damage in a very short window if they go unnoticed. Unlike fungal disease or nutrient deficiencies, which tend to develop gradually and give homeowners time to react, a grub infestation can turn a healthy section of lawn into dead, rollable turf within a couple of weeks once the larvae reach their most destructive feeding stage. Signs That Point to Grubs Specifically

Grub damage tends to appear as irregular patches that grow larger over a period of days to weeks, often starting in a specific section and spreading outward as the larvae move to feed on nearby roots.
Turf that lifts like a loose carpet. This is the most reliable field test. Grab a section of brown or thinning turf and pull. If the grass and top layer of soil lift away easily, almost like pulling back a carpet, with little to no root resistance, grubs have likely consumed the root system in that area. Healthy turf, even under drought stress, resists this kind of lifting because the roots are still intact and anchored.
Increased animal activity on the lawn. Skunks, raccoons, and crows feed on grubs, and a sudden increase in digging, torn-up patches, or birds probing the lawn in the early morning is a strong secondary indicator. This kind of animal damage often shows up before the grub damage itself becomes visually obvious, so it is worth investigating rather than dismissing as a nuisance.
A spongy or unusually soft feel underfoot. As roots are consumed, the soil surface loses its normal firmness. Areas that feel unusually soft or springy compared to the rest of the lawn are worth a closer look.
How to Confirm Grubs Before Treating
Before applying any grub control product, confirm the presence and density of larvae. Cut a one-foot square section of turf about 2 to 3 inches deep in a few different spots, including both damaged and adjacent healthy-looking areas, and fold back the sod to inspect the soil. Count the grubs you find in each sample.
As a general guideline, five or fewer grubs per square foot is typically within a range lawns can tolerate without treatment, particularly if the grass is otherwise healthy and well-rooted. Beyond that threshold, especially in the eight to ten or more per square foot range, treatment is usually warranted to prevent further root loss. These thresholds can vary somewhat based on turf health and grass species, so if you are uncertain, a professional inspection can confirm what you are dealing with before you invest in treatment.
Timing Matters More Than Product Choice
Grub control products fall into two general categories: preventive treatments applied before eggs hatch, and curative treatments applied to kill grubs that are already present and feeding. Preventive products need to go down in early summer, well before the July through September damage window, to be effective. Curative treatments work best when grubs are small and actively feeding near the surface, which in Maine is generally August into early September.
Treating too early or too late reduces effectiveness regardless of which product is used. This is one of the more common reasons homeowners feel like a grub treatment “did not work,” when the underlying issue was timing rather than product selection.
Why Grub Pressure Varies From Property to Property
Grub populations are not uniform across the greater Bucksport, Orland, Penobscot, and Hermon area. Properties near wooded edges, with well-irrigated turf, or with a history of past infestations tend to see higher beetle activity, since adult beetles are drawn to moist soil for egg-laying. Grubs Versus Other Common Look-Alike Problems
Homeowners sometimes assume the worst when they see brown patches in late summer, but several other issues can look similar to grub damage at a glance. Summer dormancy in cool-season grasses produces overall browning that is more uniform across sun-exposed areas, without the loose, liftable turf that grub feeding causes. Chinch bug damage, while less common in Maine than in warmer climates, tends to show up in hot, dry, sunny areas and does not cause the same rootless, carpet-like lifting. Fungal diseases typically show distinct patterns, such as rings, streaks, or a specific color change, rather than the irregular patches grubs produce. The turf-lift test remains the single most reliable way to distinguish grub damage from these other possibilities, since none of these other problems destroy the root system in the same direct way.
Keeping Records From Year to Year
Because grub pressure tends to repeat in the same general areas of a property over multiple years, keeping a simple record of where damage or high grub counts showed up, and when, makes each future season easier to manage. A property with a documented history of grub activity near a wooded edge, for example, is a much stronger candidate for a preventive early-summer treatment than a guess based on a single bad season.
